In Minecraft, having maxed out armor and tools is an incredible feat, which takes a lot of time and effort to accomplish.

Each enchantment is meant to help the player with a different aspect of their life throughout their Minecraft world: protection, attack, speed, and even breathing.

When it comes to fully maxing out a player’s armor, breathwork is one of the few enchantments players strive for on their helmets.

Here’s a look at what the Breathing Enchantment in Minecraft is, what it does, and why players are so excited to have it on their superpowered armor sets.

What is respiration in Minecraft?

Essentially, the breath enchantment in Minecraft works to help the player breathe underwater. Without any enchantments or potion effects, Minecraft players can hold their breath for about 15 seconds before running out of air and starting to drown.

Breathing enchantments work to extend the amount of time a player can stay submerged underwater before drowning, and the difference is astronomical.

What are the levels of respiration enchantments?

Breathing enchantment in Minecraft is divided into three tiers: I, II, and III. Each level of enchantment adds 15 seconds to the time the player can stay underwater. This means that with Breath I alone, the player can stay underwater for 30 seconds instead of 15.

Breathing II gives the player 45 seconds underwater and Breathing III gives them a full minute underwater.

The Breathing Enchantment can be enhanced with the addition of the Aquatic Affinity Enchantment, which also helps players breathe underwater. Players can even add these enchantments to a turtle shell helmet to maximize the effects.

Breathe III can be obtained through an enchantment table, but most players find it easier to upgrade their armor by fusing Breathe I and II books or enchantments.

To merge enchantments, players must use an anvil and put together two of the same enchantment level. For example, if you merge two Respiration I books, you will get the Respiration II reader. Then, merging this Respiration II book with another of the same level will result in the final Respiration III form.

The breath enchantment in Minecraft is vital for players who intend to spend time in the water. It comes in handy when searching for shipwrecks, underwater sea temples, collecting blocks underwater, and much more.

The Breathing Enchantment is a necessity when trying to defeat a Guardian Sea Temple. During this process, the player is completely submerged underwater and is forced to attack a barricade of Guardians in addition to the Ancient Guardian.

Breathing is also very handy for players who need to collect masses of blocks like gravel, sand, and clay, as the majority of these blocks spawn near or underwater.

Blocks like Prismarine, Prismarine Stairs, and Sponge can also only be found underwater, so it’s hard to collect them without this enchantment.
