The legend of Eid-al-Adha

The origin of the festival of Bakrid is described in Islamic traditions. Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) was instructed by God to bring his Egyptian wife Hajar and their son Ishmael to the desert of Saudi Arabia and drop them there. By divine intervention, a well appeared here which helped Hazar and his son to survive. Later, Abraham returned here and preached the word of God.

To test him, God repeatedly ordered him to sacrifice his only son, Ishmael, in dreams. When Abraham asked Ishmael, he was ready to bow to God’s will. Satan tried to distract them, but Ishmael drove him away by throwing stones.

In the end, when Abraham tried to slit his son’s throat, he escaped divine intervention and found that a ram was sacrificed in its place. To commemorate this day of sacrifice and God’s mercy, Eid-al-Adha is celebrated with animal sacrifices.
