The rise of T20 cricket has accelerated over the last few years in the sport, with more franchise leagues around the world following the IPL model, including Major League Cricket in the United States and SA20 in South Africa.

Fans and broadcasters alike are enjoying seeing the best players in the world compete in the leagues, with events now taking place across the 12-month calendar. However, one of the knock-on effects of this congested schedule is that countries are not playing much 50-overs cricket now.

Despite the lack of ODI matches over the last couple of years, the world’s best players will head to India ahead of the start of the 2023 Cricket World Cup in October, desperate to win the trophy many dreamed of lifting when they first started playing the sport.

The Cricket World Cup was inaugurated in 1975, and unlike many cricket tournaments today, it is rich in history. It is one of the biggest sports tournaments in the world. Australia is the most successful nation, as they have won the World Cup a record five times, while India has been crowned the champions twice (1983 and 2011).

Although nations may continue to reduce the amount of 50-over cricket they play, the 2027 edition of the World Cup is scheduled to be played in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, while bids are being accepted by the ICC for the 2033 tournament. If those events continue to be supported by the best players in the world, the competition can continue to thrive alongside the T20 game.

India Favorites for Third World Cup Success

As of September 26, India is the +220 favorite in the cricket satta betting. They rank number one in the ICC standings in all three formats of the sport, and they have a squad that is packed with talent.

India warmed up for the Cricket World Cup with a success at the 2023 Asia Cup. They defeated Sri Lanka in the final of the tournament, bowling them out for just 50 runs in that game. Their pace bowler Mohammed Siraj was the star of that final, taking four wickets in one over to put his side on top. He is now the top-ranked bowler in the ICC ODI bowling standings.

Rohit Sharma is set to captain India this year. He missed out on selection in his country’s squad in 2013, so he will be desperate to taste World Cup success for the first time in his career in what could be his last appearance in the tournament.

The India captain will be supported in his team by Virat Kohli, who will be playing in his fourth World Cup, while opener Shubman Gill, the number-two-ranked batsman in the world, will be looking to impress on his World Cup debut.

The last three winners of the Cricket World Cup have been the hosts, so India will be hoping that trend continues on Indian soil this year.

England Defending Champions After 2019 Maiden Triumph

Four years ago at Lord’s, England won the World Cup for the first time, defeating New Zealand in the final. The two teams were tied after 50 overs which meant they had to play a Super Over. Once again both teams were locked on the same score, but it was England who lifted the trophy on the boundary countback rule.

England travels to India for the tournament looking to become the first nation in 16 years to successfully defend the World Cup. Jos Butler is now their captain after taking over from Eoin Morgan following the last tournament.

In what was breaking news earlier this year, Buttler persuaded Ben Stokes to come out of retirement to play in this competition for England. Their strong batting line-up also includes Joe Root, Jonny Bairstow, Harry Brook, and Dawid Malan.

England were also successful in the 2022 T20 World Cup last November in Australia. If they can complete the World Cup double in the 50-overs event, they may jump back to the top of the world rankings with the ICC.

The 2023 Cricket World Cup takes place between October 5 and November 19, with the final set to be held in the 134,000-seater stadium in Ahmedabad.
