The Vampire Diaries forced fans into impressive moments for eight years. Lead writers Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec keep audiences on the edge of their seats with unexpected moment after unexpected moment. From shocking deaths to even more shocking returns, even the most critical of viewers can’t deny that the show has never had a dull moment.

LJ Smith’s original Vampire Diaries book series ran from 1991 to 2012. Like its live-action adaptation, the stories took many twists and turns. It was the popularity of In Twist that led to its live-action adaptation in 2009. Fans of the book and TV series were fascinated by love stories and dramas remained.

But even die-hard fans were completely shocked by possibly the biggest plot twist in the series: Caroline’s pregnancy in Season 7! Some fans loved it, some fans hated it, and others were just confused. The opinion that matters most, however, is Candice King (aka Acola), who played Carolyn Forbes. So what did he think?

First comes the plot twist!

In the final episode of Season 6, “I’ll Wed You in the Golden Summertime,” Josette “Joe” Laughlin (Jodie Lynn O’Keefe) marries Alaric Saltzman (Matt Davis). Unfortunately, the romantic moment ends in bloodshed when Kai Parker (Chris Wood) murders a pregnant Joe, before she can even say, “I do!” Thus ends the story of Joe and his unborn twins. . .

It’s not true at all. It turns out that the writers also thought Kai’s murder of a pregnant woman was too much. They almost immediately start planning how to at least get the twins back in the picture. They wanted drama, but they also wanted pleasure.

The intention of the writers was to create a story to deduce the tragedy of the Triple Death. Plot? A random woman will show up at Alaric’s door and claim to be pregnant with her twins. But both Williamson and Pleck agreed that this particular story might be a bit too much by TVD standards. Plec then receives a call from King that will change the course of Caroline’s story.

Then comes the baby!

King’s phone call to plc the week before Comic-Con was filled with fear and anticipation. At best, it presented a film question about when Caroline was a vampire who — for all intents and purposes — couldn’t get pregnant. At least, she feared that her attitude towards the show might cost her her job.

But instead of frustration or anger, Plec King surprised with delight! He finally had a vehicle to move forward with the story of the transferred child. Ironically, this is where things take a turn for the worse. Most of the Gemini Covenant are killed during the havoc of their leader, Kai. The surviving members use their remaining moments to magically transfer them to a surrogate who turns out to be Caroline Forbes herself.

As weird as it sounds, it really helped both on and off-screen. Williamson and Pleck were able in Season 7 to fully realize the story they had planned for Season 6. Plus, they were able to incorporate King’s actual pregnancy into the show. Way to kill two conspiracy birds with one baby stone!

King is yet to comment on his feelings about the plot twist. But she did an interview where she theorized that the speed of the vampire would help Carolyn and Stephen change diapers faster. She also thought that they could use their vampire pressure to help the baby cry.

While this may not be morally correct, it does provide a funny mental picture. She has clearly left it up to the fans to decide whether it was a plot twist or a plot hole.
