Nature of Assistance

Under the scheme, the tenure of the Junior Research Fellowship is initially for two years. The individual’s work is evaluated by experts after the expiry of the two-year term. If the research work of an individual is found to be substantial, the period is extended for another three years under careful consideration of the Senior Research Fellowship.

If the work of the initial two years is not found sufficient, he is given an additional year for enhancement. However, during this period he is designated as Junior Research Fellow. In such cases, the work is re-evaluated after three years, and if improvements are detected, the partner gets two additional years under the SRF. Accordingly, the tenure of the fellowship is five years, with no provision for further extension.

Eligibility

To be eligible for JRF, a candidate must have passed the UGC’s National Eligibility Test or the UGC-Council of Scientific and Industrial Research Combined Examination. However, the final pickup session of the candidates for JRF is done by the Universities/Institutions/Colleges.

The candidate should be enrolled for MPhil/Ph.D. at the most accessible opportunity of issue of eligibility certificate of UGC NET/UGC-CSIR examinations, but not later than a period of two years. The actual amount of the fellowship is made with effect from the date of joining.

Procedure For Monitoring

The work of Junior or Senior Fellows is scrutinized by their respective Inspector/Guardian and indicated in the Annual Development Report and submitted to the University for submission to the UGC office. On completion of the first two years of the award, one applies to the department/university to join the promotion of SRF. For this, a panel is constituted with a supervisor, head of the department, and external expert to assess the examination work.

The proposal for the up-gradation of the committee is sent to the University Grants Commission. In this way, the person is promoted and assigned as SRF. The proposal of the committee in approved proforma is submitted to the office for record. Approval from UGC is not required. The fellowship may be terminated during the term and the decision of the Commission is conclusive and irrevocable.

The duration of the fellowship is five years, subject to a substantial progress report of the fellow, or the presentation of a Ph.D. thesis, whichever is earlier.
