Mark 15:15 says the same: “So Pilate, wishing to satisfy the crowd, released for them Barabbas, and having scourged Jesus, he delivered him to be crucified.”
John 19:1 simply states: “Then Pilate took Jesus and had him flogged.”
There is no quantitative data in any of these verses. But, they do state that scourging was part of the punishment Jesus underwent before His crucifixion.
Roman Scourging Practices
We need to examine first-century Roman methods of scourging to understand what Jesus most likely went through.
Roman flagellation or scourging was a common precursor to crucifixion. The whip used a flagrum or flagellum. And, it contains several leather thongs. And these were often embedded with metal or bone. The instrument was designed to tear the flesh and to inflict utmost pain and blood loss.
Unlike Jewish law, where there was a limit of up to 40 lashes (Deuteronomy 25:3), no limitation existed with the Romans. Roman scourging, in fact, continued until the executioner was satisfied that the punishment was sufficient.
That could mean 20 or 100, depending on if the soldiers’ disposition, incentive, or sadistic inclination was one way or the other.
Thus, while Jewish law limited lashes to 39 (typically 40 minus one, as by the Apostle Paul), Roman scourging had no predetermined number.
The 39 Lashes: A Common Misconception
Jesus is assumed by many to have received 39 lashes, but this is a number drawn from Jewish, not Roman, tradition. According to Jewish law, flogging was restricted to 40 lashes in an effort to avoid excessive punishment (see Deuteronomy 25:3). But Jesus was convicted by Roman, not Jewish, authority. Pontius Pilate, the Roman governor, ordered the scourging. So the Jewish law of 39 lashes would not have applied. The punishments of the soldiers, under Roman law, were typically much more severe.
Physical and Symbolic Interpretations
Even though Scripture never gives exact numbers, there are Christian traditions that give the number of lashes symbolic meaning. Some traditions credit the 39 lashes to the 39 root diseases of ancient medicine. Here, Jesus’ agony is perceived as healing.
This understanding is meaningful to the majority of believers. It is not recorded in history. It’s symbolic, not historical.
The Cruelty of Roman Whipping
While we don’t know an absolute number, medical examinations and records of history reveal that the scourging Jesus endured was painful and harsh.
Roman flogging was the most violent that it left prisoners with gashes, exposed bone, and lots of blood loss. It was employed to leave a prisoner incapacitated prior to being crucified, even killing the prisoner at times. Jesus’ scourging would have left Him physically devastated, which explains His weakening when He was bearing His cross (Mark 15:21).
We May Never Know the Exact Number
So how many times did Jesus get whipped? The Bible does not indicate. Roman tradition gives no official count, and the generally accepted figure of 39 is more a matter of Jewish tradition than Roman custom.
What we do know is this : scourging hurt, embarrassed, and was part of the physical agony that Jesus experienced before His crucifixion. The amount of lashes, from a historical perspective, is not as significant as the meaning behind the agony.
