Is Julie Baumeister Alive? : Julie Baumeister’s name first appeared in the news during one of Indiana’s most sensational criminal investigations. Formerly married to suspected serial killer Herbert Baumeister, she led a peaceful life until her husband’s crimes were discovered in the mid-1990s.

The Fox Hollow Farm murders were nationwide news due to their horror and magnitude of loss. But years after the headlines had long since passed, it still crosses minds to wonder : Is Julie Baumeister alive? Where is she today?

The answer is yes. Julie Baumeister is alive and currently living in Fishers, Indiana. While the past still haunts many who followed the case, Julie has chosen a life of quiet resilience, rebuilding away from the public spotlight.

A Marriage Marked by Secrets

Julie married Herbert “Herb” Baumeister in November 1971. They seemed to live a typical life and had three children together. But things started to crack early on. Herbert was hospitalized just six months into marriage for treatment in a psychiatric hospital.

Julie would later describe how her husband became emotionally detached and slept in another room frequently.

Even though the couple experienced an initial period of difficulty, they were eventually able to launch a business of their own. They opened a Sav-A-Lot thrift store in 1988, which ultimately branched out into a second location.

The success of their business allowed them to buy Fox Hollow Farm, a large Westfield, Indiana estate, in 1992. But behind the apparently settled suburban existence there existed a nightmare secret.

Julie’s Growing Suspicions

Julie later testified about unsettling indicators during her marriage. She characterized Herbert as cold and emotionally unstable. He allegedly cut his mother out of his life for years and acted erratically.  Herbert also abandoned Julie at home when the family went out after a fight.

Julie's Growing Suspicions

In December 1994, Julie’s son and his friend discovered a human skull in the woods behind their house. And, when Herbert was questioned, he informed Julie that the skull was a medical specimen left behind by his deceased father.

And, he put the blame on his physician father. Julie thought the explanation strange, but did not pursue the matter further at the time.

A Horrific Discovery at Fox Hollow Farm

By the mid-1990s, police had been probing a series of disappearances of young men from Indiana’s gay community. Detectives finally focused on Fox Hollow Farm. In June 1996, Julie permitted police to search the estate.

What they discovered was appalling : thousands of human remains, burned and reduced to a powder, covering the estate. At least eight victims were confirmed, with additional remains still unaccounted for.

As the probe went deeper, Herbert Baumeister escaped to Canada, where he took his own life on July 3, 1996. In a three-page suicide note, he did not refer to the killings, leaving behind a trail of unanswered questions and bereaved families.

Life After Tragedy : Is Julie Baumeister Alive?

After her ex-husband died, Julie concentrated on taking back control of her life. She divorced in January 1996, only a few months before the Fox Hollow Farm discovery. Subsequently, she reverted to her last name as Julie Saiter and went back to work.

Julie took retail jobs at Gap Inc. and Old Navy. Here, she worked steadily to support herself and her children. In 2005, she began working at Old National Bank and here she worked for nearly two decades.

Now, Julie Baumeister resides quietly in Fishers, Indiana, a suburban community just outside Indianapolis. She leads a low-key life among close friends, family, and her prized pet dog. Online, she will occasionally post brief glimpses of her life, such as gardening and activities with her children, though they are kept confidential.

Looking Back on the Case : Media Foothold Recurs

Public fascination with the Baumeister case has returned in recent years, particularly with the Hulu documentary release of The Fox Hollow Murders: Playground of a Serial Killer. The series delves into Herbert’s life, the investigation, and the harrowing events that transpired at Fox Hollow Farm.

Julie is indirectly featured in the documentary, which also touches on the police search and timeline that culminated in Herbert’s suicide. The series gives additional background information on Julie’s suspicions and events that finally led her to collaborate with authorities.

A Life Marked by Strength

Though her association with one of Indiana’s most heinous crimes continues to be a part of her past, Julie Baumeister has continued on with courage. She rebuilt her life out of public tragedy, centered herself around her children, and centered herself in peace, privacy, and purpose.

However unlikely to ever shake free of her shadowed history, Julie Baumeister lives on, prospering, in progress, with the world in reminder that one may be found strong even amidst horrors.
