Though there’s been talking of cricket’s demise for some time, it appears that those reports were greatly exaggerated. Cricket remains hugely popular, with millions of players taking part in the sport in more than one hundred countries worldwide.

While most people are content to simply head outside on a sunny day and have a game with their friends, for others, cricket is much more than that. It’s a job. There are some 4,000 professional cricketers who make their living bowling, batting, and fielding.

And some of them are exceptionally good at what they do. In this blog, we’ll take a look at the best of the best of the cricketing world, the players who are currently among the best in the world — and who will almost certainly go down in history as some of the best to have ever played the game.

Ben Stokes

It’s been a while since the England Cricket Team had a true star in its ranks. But they’ve most definitely found one in Ben Stokes. One of the best all-rounders in the world, Stokes won the ICC Best Cricketer of the Year Award and BBC Sports Personality Of the Year 2019. Injuries and personal issues meant he hadn’t played too much cricket in recent months, but he’s back now. And the England team is happy he is. Their cricket betting odds are much better when he’s in the team; that’s why fans were so delighted that he announced himself as fit to take part in the Ashes.

David Warner

Australia has produced plenty of great batsmen over the years. But there aren’t too many that can match David Warner when it comes to all-around awesomeness with a bat in their hand. For one, there’s virtually no environment in which Warner won’t excel, which makes him a massive threat. He’s ambidextrous, which means he can play with both hands, and boy does he. He’s racked up thousands of runs on all continents and against all types of bowler. He’s simply extremely difficult to play against.

Virat Kholi

If there’s one person that can compete with Warner with a bat in their hand, it’s Virat Kholi. An extremely dominant and powerful player, the Indian cricket player has a record that few others in history can match, let alone contemporary cricketers. One thing that really makes Kholi stand out is that he’s never intimidated by the big stage. He’s a player that takes stress in his stride; indeed, he seems to embrace it. When you need a run in a high-pressure match, it’s Kholi you’ll want to have at the crease.

AB De Villiers

AD De Villiers has, finally, brought his career to a close. He announced his retirement back in November. But make no mistake: he’s still one of the best players in the world. If he came out of retirement to lead his native New Zealand in a match, he’d most definitely be a key player. During the span of his long and illustrious career, De Villiers scored more than 20,000 runs, which worked out as an average of fifty runs in One Day Internationals and Test Matches. Very impressive!

MS Dhoni

Some say MS Dhoni isn’t just the best player in the world; he’s the best Indian cricketer that the country has ever had. And it’s hard to argue that assessment. Extremely successful as a captain, Dhoni’s skill as a wicketkeeper and all-around leadership, not to mention an excellent at-bat average, makes him a force to be reckoned with. It’s not just his top-draw ability that makes Dhoni stand out, but the amount of time he’s been performing at the highest level. He also gave cricket a new type of at-bat shot called “The Helicopter,” which allows players to hit a yorker bowl for six for the first time ever.
